PINE RIDGE ART ASSOCIATION HISTORY
Cobourg, Northumberland County, Ontario

The club was founded in 1992 by a group of local artists led by Margaret Recoskie and Blair Morris. It was to be and still is a collective of local artists. A Charter Meeting was held on November 4, 1992 and the name selected for the group was Pine Ridge Art Association. Member Wayne Deremo designed the club logo and had it legally registered. Two of the founding members, who still attend, are Linda Coffee and Linda Wakeman.

The purpose of the club is to:

(1)   Foster the development of the artistic skill of members, in a friendly environment, with emphasis on good design and workmanship.

(2)   Hold exhibitions and shows and to promote members art work in the community.

(3)   Meet regularly to foster interest and instruction in art in a variety of mediums.

Originally the meetings were held on the first Wednesday of the month at St. Peter's Church, Cobourg. Local artists and club members were arranged to speak about art and demonstrate techniques. Members also met at a restaurant, at that time, located in the train station, on Wednesday evenings for figure drawing.

The first art show was held in May 1993 at Dalewood Golf and Curling Club. Later shows have been held at Northumberland Mall and St. Peter's Church. Today an annual show of our member's works is held on the first weekend of November at the Cobourg Public Library.

In 2005, one of the Association's members, Mary Field, organized a separate group of painters to meet during the day on Mondays at the Oddfellow's Hall (now known as The Cobourg Memorial Temple on University Avenue West). The majority of these artists belonged to PRAA and so Mary was asked if the two groups could merge.

The name Pine Ridge Art Association was retained and Mary became the first President under a new charter. Membership was set at 50 members.

Today, Pine Ridge Art Association continues to meet every Monday (excluding holidays) from September to June at the Cobourg Memorial Temple. These weekly gatherings have become an informal open painting session.

The club has an inclusive friendly policy that our members continue to maintain. New members are welcomed, without judgment, regardless of their artistic skill level.
